Wankhede Stadium — The Major Dispute
- The Bombay Cricket Association and the CCI (Cricket Club of India) used to have disagreements about how to divide profits and distribute tickets for cricket matches.
- Clearly, the BCA has overseen cricket in Mumbai and its neighboring areas. However, due to a lack of a stadium, BCA was compelled to host the games at CCI.
- On numerous occasions, BCA asked for additional ticket allocation. However, the CCI declined, claiming that any concession would result in a loss of revenue for the club because they spend a lot of money on ground support. The BCA was extremely irritated by this irrational behavior.
- But when former Indian cricket player Vijay Merchant, the president of the CCI, turned down SK Wankhede’s offer to hold charity matches for MLAs at the Brabourne Stadium in 1973–74, things became very heated.
- Subsequently, Wankhede visited Vasantrao Naik to discuss the idea of constructing a new stadium. However, claiming a lack of funds, Naik declined to finance the project.
